Bearing the Burdens of the Vulnerable
Hopefully you haven’t had to endure the helpless feeling of having your world turned upside down and ripped apart, like many in Mississippi. Severe storms, straight-line winds, and tornadoes struck the state of Mississippi from March 24-25. For those who are elderly or disabled, the situation is even more harrowing. That is the reason why Cajun Navy Ground Force is here. We provide swift intervention to stabilize the working poor, elderly, and disabled who reside in communities impacted by natural disasters.
Unfortunately, natural disasters can disproportionately impact older people and those with disabilities. These populations are often less able to withstand extended periods of time without food, water, medication, and rest. They might also have mobility or communications limitations that affect their ability to respond. Chronic conditions, dependence on assistive devices, and support requirements from caregivers during and after disasters are prevalent. The likelihood of social isolation and the potential for psychological distress increases following a disaster for those who are defenseless. It is also common to find gaps in how prepared their caregivers are, especially those who care for older adults with dementia.
When a disaster strikes, Cajun Navy Ground Force wastes no time. Our highly trained core team manages an influx of volunteers to provide a full range physical and emotional care. We establish a safe base location, known as a SAFE Camp, where we are able to distribute supplies and deliver community care. As a data-driven action oriented nonprofit, we train professional citizens possessing vital skills to help wherever they are needed the most. We embed these volunteers into affected communities for an extended period of time, enabling us to assess needs and scale our efforts. We utilize social technologies to connect with volunteers and the communities we serve. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and with a variety of background knowledge, including media and journalism, social media influence, technology and systems, home repair, tree and debris removal, medical and mental health, first responders, FEMA training, and emergency management. We collaborate with community partners to build a coordinated program specially designed to meet the immediate needs of those affected by disasters.
